Second Life

Last night was an interesting once again in my learning of the technological world. I got home at 6:30 from school, had to make supper for my 4 starving children(who had every which direction to go for hockey) and download Second Life. Little did I realize, on my home computer, it would take over 1 hour to download the program. Then to make matters worse, my computer didn’t want to continue to download the program 1/2 way through. Therefore, I missed the whole session. Second Life looked really neat and I just wonder from others what I missed?

The whole idea of Second Life is interesting. We spent the first hour or so familiarizing ourselves with the various components of the program/”game”. The last half-hour was spent moving from location to location. I had to leave to go pick up my son so I was unable to complete the tour. It was fun but I’m not sure that it is something that I will continue with as it requires time and I would much rather connect with real people than ‘virtual’ ones. The exposure to another tool was wonderful but I can’t imagine that with four children you would have the time to sit and spend hours in front of the screen taking part in a “virtual world”. I only have two children and it’s difficult to find the time to do that. I wouldn’t worry too much about missing the session. The believe the other tools that we have explored are much more relevant in our journey.

The whole second life thing does not interest me at all. I have no interest in a game like that - call me old school. I missed the session as well, I’m actually glad I had to coach a playoff game that night.
